How to Enjoy Self-Care, Scandinavian Style

I remember feeling very sorry for myself one October morning.

My instagram feed was full of cosy autumnal scenes - bright and colourful leaves scattered around, happy families are frolicking in the sun wearing their comfy hats and gloves.

And the view from my window could not be more depressing - grey skies, pouring rain and wind that could carry a toddler. I knew I could not change the weather but I could change my attitude.

I thought to myself, how do people in the Nordic and the Scandinavia deal with grey skies and general lack of sun? A friend of mine who lives in Norway is always pretty cheerful, what’s her secret? So I started reading about how people in Scandinavia brighten up their days.

Here is my short collection of tips on how to bring a bit of autumnal charm to this disgracefully wet October.

1. Kakkukahvi and Fika – The Simple Joy of Coffee and Cake

Let’s start with Kakkukahvi or Fika that quickly turned into my favourite Scandinavian self-care. In a nutshell, it’s about taking a moment to slow down, grab a cup of coffee, and add a guilt-free slice of cake. Yes, it’s that simple, and honestly, it’s glorious.

You can make this a daily ritual (maybe not daily, because of all the calories 😆) or save it for when you need an extra pick-me-up. The key is not to rush. Put the kettle on, serve yourself something sweet, and take a break from the hustle. Breathe in and out…and enjoy your day, Scandinavian style.

2. Cozy Up Your Space

Creating a cozy atmosphere at home is what Scandinavian self-care is all about. Think plush, think fluffy, and think layers. Now is the time to pull out your thickest throws, fluffiest jumpers, and cosiest socks (Christmas themed are ok). Pile them all on and let the comfort take you somewhere else.

I have this thick fluffy jumper that you won’t see me wearing outside. But, on a cold crispy day, I’ll happily wear it if I don’t need to appear in front of real people. It makes me feel loved, like a hug from a friend! The colour is very festive, which might add to its appeal. Even thinking of wearing it makes me feel fuzzy inside.

And another tip - got a hand warmer lying around? Grab that too! It’s these little details that make all the difference when you’re stretching on the sofa or working a t your desk. Keep something warm on your lap (unless you have a pet who’s happy to do it). It’s not just about surviving the cold, its about actively enjoying it.

3. Brighten Up Your World

In Scandinavian countries, the sun’s barely out, but that doesn’t stop them from adding a splash of colour to their lives. Brighten up your living space with something outrageously colourful —swap out those neutral-toned cushions for vibrant shades like yellow, red, or orange. It’ll lift your mood and give your home an instant cozy refresh.

Don’t be afraid to do the same with your wardrobe. Bright sweaters, bold scarves, cheerful coats—they all help to shake off the grayness of winter. And boy we need it here in the UK.

4. Light Your Favorite Candle

Nothing says cozy like lighting your favourite candle and filling your space with the warmest, sweetest scents. Whether you’re into cinnamon and apple, pumpkin spice, or the sweet smell of burning fire, let your senses guide you. Scandinavian winters are long and dark, so they know how to sprinkle joy into their homes. I’d say that a deliciously scented candle is a must during long grey winter days.

My favourite candle scent is campfire and cedar, which smells truly divine (to me). Find your own aroma that would lift your spirits and add a dash of magic to your living space.

5. Layer Up in Style

This is where Scandinavians excel—staying warm while looking effortlessly stylish. Don’t shy away from layering up and wearing clothes that keep you snug and comfortable. Thick woolly hats, oversized scarves, chunky sweaters—they’re not just practical, they’re part of the Scandinavian charm.

Enjoy the snug feeling of pulling on a thick coat, wrapping up in a scarf, and pulling up your snuggliest boots before heading out. There’s a real comfort in being dressed just right for the weather—no shivering, no rushing to get inside. You’re prepared and you’ll enjoy whatever the weather throws at you (maybe apart from cold showers and hailstorms).

Final Thoughts on Self-Care Scandinavian Style

Taking time for yourself, getting cozy, and embracing comfort is what Scandinavian self-care is all about. Whether it’s sipping coffee with a slice of cake, lighting your favorite candle, or adding a dash of color to your wardrobe, these little moments of joy are what make the cold months not just bearable, but something to actually enjoy.
